The apple of our eye From a health and nutrition perspective, that old saying should probably read “The apples of our brain” or “The apples of our heart” as researchers have found that apples help protect our brain cells from oxidative damage and decrease the buildup of fats on our artery walls.

Best of all, apples are at their peak for picking yourself or selecting at your local farmer’s market. Now’s the time to look for the numerous lesser-known varieties not usually available year-round at grocery stores, Check with your favourite apple grower to see what types are currently at their best in your area.

To find out more about the many other health benefits of apples, and for fresh ways to get more apples into your daily diet, see “Awesome Apples” in our October issue (page 96) on newsstands now. And link to Our Best Healthy Apple Recipes.
