Quick tips for resolution success

Woman in nature

'Tis the season to set goals—and, stereotypically, to break them. But there are ways to make your resolutions and keep them, too. Try these helpful tips for common resolutions from three Kellogg's experts and you'll see progress fast. Plus, make sure to check out our resolutions guide, with more need-to-know info on New Year's resolutions.

1. Stacey Segal, registered dietitian
New Year’s resolution: Eat well-balanced meals
Stacey offers the following tips to avoid temptation and plan ahead.
• Eat breakfast every day. Research shows that breakfast eaters are slimmer than non breakfast eaters (Harvard Health Publications), with one study reporting that missing breakfast was associated with a fourfold increase in the risk of obesity.
• Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. 62 percent of Canadians eat one or two snacks per day (Tracking Nutrition Trends, 2008), so why not plan for them? To avoid eating those unhealthy snacks, take smart snacks with you when on the go, like an apple or an energy or granola bar, such as a low-fat Kellogg's Special K bar.

2. Eva Redpath, fitness expert and personal trainer
New Year’s resolution: Exercise regularly
Eva suggests the following tips to make exercise part of your daily routine.
• Identify your exercise personality and interests. Whether it's group exercise, playing sports or working out at home, there are plenty of interesting and fun ways to stay fit. Whatever works for you, just make a choice you’ll enjoy.
• Set realistic goals. Consider all your obligations and choose a time to exercise that is realistic and manageable on an ongoing basis.

3. Lynda Jean, image consultant
New Year’s resolution: Stay motivated
Lynda offers the following suggestions to help you embrace each day in 2009 with your full potential.
• Celebrate accomplishments along the way. Sticking to lifestyle changes like nutrition and exercise can be challenging so give yourself all the help and support you need.
• Make the best of what you have.  Admire and accentuate the things about you that you feel good about—both on the inside and the outside. No matter how good you look on the outside, you will never look your best without feeling good on the inside.
