Let's live a little greener

Green leaves

Being eco-friendly is often focused on the sacrifices and doom and gloom—and honestly? We've got enough doom and gloom going around right now. So let's focus on the positive (like the end of winter!) with two upcoming earth-centred events this spring.

Earth Hour
Saturday, March 28 marks the second annual international Earth Hour (the third for folks down in Sydney, Australia). Did you celebrate last year? I spent Earth Hour alone in my living room, reading by candlelight, and it was the most peaceful evening I'd spent in ages. This year I may do the same, or get together with friends for an evening of barbeque and conversation—also by candlelight, of course.

This year, the organizers at the WWF are asking us to show our solidarity against global warming by turning the lights off again, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm (local time), and voting for the earth. Find out more at earthhour.org, and share your tips for celebrating in the comments.

Earth Day
Not far on the heels of Earth Hour comes Earth Day, on Wednesday, April 22. Surely it will be spring by then and we can celebrate outdoors. Events are going on all week across the country—there are listings (and you can submit your own) at earthday.ca. I just browsed through them and found a 5K Earth Run going on in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa on April 26, and I've signed up. (I'm raising money for the David Suzuki Foundation, and if you're interested, you can make a contribution in my name.) What are you going to do for Earth Day?

The rest of the year
Of course, two days a year does not an eco-friendly lifestyle make. Here are links to some of our articles on living greener, and we've got more in the works. How are you feeling about the environment these days, and its relationship to your health? Please, let me know.
