Is Tantric sex really all that?

Couple kissing

Recently I came across an article about Tantric sex that made me curious. The article didn't go into the nitty gritty details, so I was left with questions. The only thing I know about it is that Sting and Trudie Styler swear by it, and devotees claim practising it can result in sex that lasts for hours. But what exactly is it? Is it a breathing technique, a certain meditation, or a Pilates-inspired set of exercises? And do people in Canada do it too? I don't know anyone who has signed up for a Tantric sex workshop at the local rec centre. But that certainly doesn't mean it's not out there. And I wonder if it really can cause a seismic shift in your sex life.

If there are any Best Health readers who have intimate knowledge of what Tantric sex can do, I'd love to hear your take. If it's something worth sharing we may do a story on it in a future issue and let other readers share in the secret.

  • I can wait to have this book.

  • Tantra is an ancient Indian yogic practice which involves meditation and breathing in sync with your partner and honoring sex as a sacred act of deep connection between people. Partners need to develop their tantric skills on their own in order to bring more to a meeting with their lover. A good book to start with is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Tantric Sex" by Dr Judy Kuriansky. Each chapter in the book has a series of exercises that partners can do together and alone as well to develop their tantric skills. It's great, and makes sex a much deeper and spiritual experience than just a mechanical act.
